There’s no cure for arthritis, which is unfortunate, but feeling better is definitely possible. The progression of RA may be diminished in severity and duration by the combination of medicines and therapy that work best as determined by you and your physician.

Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine and prednisone are used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Plaquenil is also used to treat or prevent malaria, and to treat symptoms of discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. Prednisone is also used to treat or manage many conditions. For Rheumatoid Arthritis Rheumatoid arthritis since 1994, pretty severe case. Had to stop taking Humira and methotrexate due to repeated bouts with pneumonia and lung damage. Currently on sulfasalazine, Plaquenil and prednisone. Occasional flares but things are basically back under control. MTX+Plaq can be a very effective method of treatment for RA, I guess because the MTX inhibits T-Cell activation and Plaq prevents messengers from telling T-cells to produce TNF - a combination which one imagines is going to be pretty effective - just make sure you have regular blood work with 25mg/w of MTX, it's on the high side, so I hope the side effects aren't too bad for you.

Being able to stop joint damage can lessen pain and mean a better quality of life. You can also put off joint damage, and in some cases, you can do more than just slow it down.

  3. Plaquenil vs Methotrexate I was diagnosed with RA a month ago and am returning to my Rheumatologist tomorrow to discuss treatment options. The doctor said that given where I am right now constant low level pain and light swelling of my hands and wrists but no joint damage showing up on xrays or the ultrasound, she gave me a choice of starting.

Was the plaquenil controlling your RA symptoms? The trouble is you lose hair on Methotrexate too. But after losing heaps when I first went on it, I have stabalised now, I have thinner hair but it still looks fine and healthy. If plaq was working for your symptoms I'd go back on it. If you feel like the RA is escallating then go for mtx. Interaction between Methotrexate and Plaquenil There is no known interaction between Methotrexate and Plaquenil in our records. However, an interaction may still exist. Always consult your doctor before taking these medications together. Do not stop taking the medications without a physician's advice. Originally, hydroxychloroquine was used to prevent and treat malaria and was considered very effective. Now it is generally used for rheumatoid arthritis, but it has also been shown to work well for juvenile arthritis, some lupus symptoms, and other types of autoimmune conditions.

The following adverse reactions have been identified during post-approval use of PLAQUENIL or other 4-aminoqunoline compounds. Because these reactions are reported voluntarily from a population of uncertain size, it is not always possible to reliably estimate their frequency or establish a causal relationship to drug exposure.
